Born in Lorain, Ohio, Dr. Kenneth J. Stein wanted to be a scientist since he was in the 2nd grade. He received his M.S. in Entomology from The Ohio State University and his Ph.D. in Entomology from Virginia Tech. In 2016, Dr. Stein retired from the United States Navy Reserve after 35 years but continued serving as a contracted medical planner for the United States Marine Corps Forces Europe and Africa in Stuttgart, Germany. The nature of his work allowed him extensive travel throughout Africa and Eastern Europe in support of our U.S. Armed Forces.
While living in Egypt, Dr. Kenneth Stein conducted and published research on sandflies, West Nile virus, ticks, and venomous snakes. After visiting the tombs of the Pharaohs, he developed an intense fascination with the Ancient Egyptians and what they knew about the natural sciences. During his career, he has also conducted and published research on hornets and yellowjackets, moths, wetland insect ecology, and predictive modeling of tick distributions. Dr. Stein has also published photos from his Ancient Egypt collection and reviewed articles for National Geographic.
At present, Dr. Stein works as a consultant and a science textbook author. He loves hiking and cycling with his family, and fishing!
